Quote of the Day:
Let me live deep while I live; let me know the rich juices of red meat and stinging wine on my palate, the hot embrace of white arms, the mad exultation of battle when blue blade flame and crimson, and I am content. Let teachers and priests and philosophers brood over questions of reality and illusion. I know this: if life is illusion, then I am no less an illusion, and being thus, the illusion is real to me. I live, I burn with life, I love, I slay, and I am content. -Conan of Cimmeria

So the NFL Network (which I ve been extolling all season) has become the All Steelers Channel and I just can t get enough. It s infectious. The suck part is knowing it ll all be over in a week.

It s just not fair. Football should never end... Hunter S could still be alive.

Apparently I am the new prophet for our times. At least when it comes to all things football. Not only am I batting 1.000 for predicting the playoffs but I have been heralding Gladys Bettis as the new Mrs. McNabb for three weeks. Well my predictions have rung true. On Tuesday Jerome and Mrs. Bettis film a Campbell s soup commercial with Mrs. McNabb and Donovan... the officially passing of the torch!

Maybe I should go play the lottery to test if my seer powers can extend beyond football.

With much anticipation, Meghan and I went to see Underworld 2 last night. I read all the reviews... funny, all the bad reviews made me wanna see the thing more than the good ones. Anyway... I was pleased with the film. It kept with the feel of the original. Had a slightly more plausible storyline and some excellent action. They definitely realized they were making an R rated product early on and decided to max out the blood, sex and language while they were at it. I had no problem with that. Soundtrack was a little lacking this time with no Maynard. Anyway, go see the film. I look forward to the extended DVD cut already.

Another high point from the evening was a very excellent looking V for Vendetta trailer. If this movie is half as good as it looks it will be the first time an Alan Moore vehicle got it s just desserts (mind you I liked LXG and loved the From Hell movie, but they were both so far removed from their source material as to barely be Moore). If this movie does well you know the "Can the Watchmen be made into a movie" great debate will resurface.

Then we must debate long into the night who could be cast as Rorschach... the most hard core superhero of all time. Ah, it s good to be a geek.

I m still basking in the afterglow. It is a glorious thing.

I have been nothing short of prophetic this playoff season. A perfect 10-0 in predicting playoff outcomes. I went so far as to predict a 3 Interception game by Jake the Snake and named the three players to make the picks... well Jake had 2 picks and 2 fumbles so I was close and I did correctly predict the two intercepters. Yeah, I m hot.

Well no surprise... I m taking the Steelers to win it all to finish out my season of destiny.

Next season I start betting on games... that s all there is to it.

The greatest thing about all this (and I stated this yesterday and all in attendence agreed whole-heartedly)... an end to all the fucking Patriots commercials! Thank God.

Brady... done. Peyton... done. Eli... still sucks. Welcome to the age of Ben.

I can t get enough football. For obvious reasons, really.

Steelers are going all the way. Seriously, not even the best efforts by the refs could not stop us. And I m inclined to beleive that Joey Porter was right... the refs were trying to boost Peyton into the playoffs. If Pete Morelli is ever allowed to ref another game about the high school level it will be a crime against humanity. Not only did he make the worst call ever made but he tried to justify it by stating a rule that does not exist, never existed and even if it did, had no bearing on the play in question. That a ref would make up a some kind of crazy here-to-fore nonexistent rule in his head to take the ball away from the Steelers blows my fucking mind.

Anyway. We are beating the Broncos. I m 8 for 8 in playoff predictions and I m seeing a Steeler Seahawk Super Bowl.

Here s my reasons why we are beating the Broncos...

First, we deserve it. Five Championship game losses in recent memory is too much to take (the Iggles fans feel me here). We ve been too long for too good not to get back to the Show.

Da Bus deserves it. The SuperBowl is XL for God s sake... XL. It would be a crime for Jerome to not be able to top off his brilliant career with a trip to his hometown and the SuperBowl.

Our defense is better. Hands down. No doubt about it. We don t have a Champ Baily shutdown corner but as a unit our defense and secondary is better.

Our offenses are similar but Big Ben is better. We rattled Peyton... we can definitely rattle Jake the Snake and revert him to his old Cardinal ways. I foresee a 3 pick day for Jake.

We ve been running over their front four in Cleveland for years. No reason why we won t do it again... blue uniforms don t change the person wearing em.

Polamalu Polamalu Polamalu.

So there.

We are the greatest team in the universe. That game should not have even been close. We destroyed Peyton Manning and every single Indianapolis Colt to the man. They have been broken. They have felt our fury.

Not even some of the worst refereeing in history can stop our... Season of Destiny. That s right. I said it. Eat it.

I m 8 for 8 on Playoff games! Glad to see the clearly superior team won in all four games. Detroit here we come!

I ve said it before and I m saying it again... were we ever really truly alive as human beings before the advent of the NFL Network? Seriously. Were we?

Tyson is a big cheater for beating me at BloodBowl. Mandelbrot s Minions only loss of the season (note the clever math joke). More specifically that guy in the stands that always shows up to his games with a sack full of pointy rocks to throw at his opponents is the real cheater.

Kong is very good. Peter Jackson is, indeed, a god. It was long suspected. Pretty much sealed the deal. A couple scenes were really over the top (the great dino stampede, and the crazy killer bugs) but overall the movie was stunning.

I m not much into webcomics. I used to be. Then realized that most of the comics I read were out of habit and definitely not for any real amount of humor. So I went cold turkey for a while. Now Scary-Go-Round and the incomparable PA are the only ones I visit with any frequency. Of the two Scary is much more consistent, but when PA is on... Oh my GOD! Anyway, I recommend checking out Killer Robots from Space. There aren t a lot of them and if you can be bothered to do a little horizontal scrolling you ll be doubled over laughing in no time.

Enough random items for now.

What a wondrous day! First the Panthros reveal the best kept secret in the NFL... that Eli Manning sucks. Like really sucks.

And then the Steelers! Dominating the Bungles for the third time this season. It was sheer audacity on their part to really think they had supplanted us in some way in the AFC North. Bungles again for sure. I love it!

And now Indy... ouch.

PS Seeing Chad Johnson crying on the sidelines like a bitch (in high def no less) is one of the greatest moments in TV history.
1/5/2006 8:19:53 PM         Catching upComments (4)
Now that I m no longer vacationing or participating in holiday functions we re finally getting a chance to catch up on movies. Saw Narnia last night at long last. Liked it a lot. I only vaguely remembered the original BBC version so I have no comparisons.

I thought the pacing was good, covering a lot of ground in a reasonable amount of time. The effects were really sweet with only a few exceptions. I thought the monsters and creatures were exceptional... the centaurs, minotaurs and all the other taurs they could muster were grand. I was a bit afraid the violence would be played down or avoided in the name of a kids movie... but there was violence aplenty just without the blood and gore of a R or PG-13 flick. Perhaps it was the lack of violence enacted upon humans that helped maintained the PG (one of Dharkanil s pet peeves).

Anyway, I wouldn t mind seeing it again and need to see Kong post haste. We actually drove around after the movie looking for a 10:00 Kong showing to no avail.

Also, I m really digging the creepy androgenous Gabriel from Constantine chick. Great casting. Can t wait to see her some more.

One other note. Sheetz is dead. Long live Hollee s!

Seriously, Hollee s the new place to go. It s right around the corner and basically a Cold Stone and Panera slammed together with better prices. Nice!

PS Also... Long Live the Hud!

OK, I ve got a lot of catching up to do Blogwise. I ll start a couple weeks back with Florida.

The trip was a lot of fun. I don t regret the decision to drive there although I don t think I ll ever do it again. I wanted to see some southern states and such and we did that. Had some very tasty southern fried chicken along the way and we hit the tourist traps in an attempt to do some Xmas shopping.

We visited South of the Border, which has gotta be the king of all tourist traps. The place is ridiculous. Pedro is everywhere. It s frightening. We took a bunch of pictures to try to capture the sheer garrishness... I think we failed.

Once we got to this so-called sunshine state, it wasn t as warm as I was expecting, nor particularly sunny. No biggie. Just meant fewer visits to the pool. We had tons of intentions and plans but not surprisingly our slothful ways won out and we spent most of the vacation in the resort... we had a really nice suite. Highlight of the week was coaxing a few stray cats onto our patio with bowls of warm milk and canned fish/meats. We christened them Spook, Shere Khan and Gigantor based on their demeanors and appearances.

On our last day we did Disney World, just because we felt we kinda had to. Be kind of silly to spend a week in Orlando and not go (although I woulda been fine with it). In any case, we did the Magic Kingdom, and were sorely disappointed. The place felt really dated, rides were near impossible to identify, and the lines were too long even for what was described by several employees as a very low volume day. We did have fun searching for clues to Walt Disney s anti-semitism and Michael Eisner s being the anti-christ... there were quite a few hidden around the park. Anyway, we left shortly after midday and headed home.

On the up side, I don t see a reason to ever go back. I mean, Florida is, afterall, America s wang.

I barely finished up my Xmas shopping during the return drive and during a mad rush on Xmas Eve day. The theme for this Xmas was weapons. My sister had given me one of those sword and knife mail order catalogs and asked me to circle some items I might want. So I selected about ten items thinking my sister would buy 1 or 2 and that way I would still be surprised. As it turns out every family member bought one or two and I ended up with 2 swords, 1 axe, 1 military pick, 1 flial, and 1 spiked club! Insane! Did I mention I am well armed?

I ate a lot, doing the household to household shuffle between my parent s and Meghan s. And soon enough it was time to head off to vacation number 2.

Tuesday we left for Williamsburg, VA with Meghan and her family. It was a decent trip. Got to talk UFC with her cage fighting brother. Got another jacuzzi equipped suite. Played some games. Got a massage. Stuffed ourselves at an All You Can Eat Seafood Buffet (ohh yeah). Got to see Colonial Williamsburg. It was decent. It was well into the off-season on a dreary day so there wasn t much going on. Probably would be a lot cooler during the summer. But it was still decent. The American Revolution is a period I don t know a lot about so it was enlightening at times.

New Years was relatively quiet. Went to my parents for traditional crab cakes and gun shooting. The highlight this year was my brother. He had badly cracked his windshield in his Pathfinder a couple weeks back so in a moment of clarity and inspiration he decided to sit in his driver s seat and shoot the AK out through the windshield! It was awesome. The report from inside a vehicle is deafening... gained a whole new respect for those gangland drive byers!

This weekend was all about football. Stillers are in the playoffs! We rule. I m happy about our draw and playing the Bengals. We dominated them in both our regular season match-ups (only a horrible call by the refs and a couple lucky turnovers saved them in Pittsburg). I m confidant we will roll over them. Most of the AFC is limping into the playoffs and the entire NFC is comparitively a minor league so I really like our chances despite having the last playoff seed.

Well, tonight is D&D so I must go and prepare.

Later, all.

So I m home again. Only a few days after my week in FL I spent another four in VA. I m just vacation crazy lately. Good times, though.

Things are settling down now and getting back to normal. I even have to work tomorrow (for the first time since Dec 15). To be honest, I think I prefer the not working to the working. Fancy that.

Anyway, much has happened, many stories to retell and all that, I m just not gonna do it right now. Later. Promise.

For now, Happy New Year to one and all. 2005 has been a grand year for me, let s hope 2006 is even better.
