Quote of the Day:
Let me live deep while I live; let me know the rich juices of red meat and stinging wine on my palate, the hot embrace of white arms, the mad exultation of battle when blue blade flame and crimson, and I am content. Let teachers and priests and philosophers brood over questions of reality and illusion. I know this: if life is illusion, then I am no less an illusion, and being thus, the illusion is real to me. I live, I burn with life, I love, I slay, and I am content. -Conan of Cimmeria

This past weekend the Reclaiming the Warhammer 40k GT project went off beautifully. Erion, Scheaf, Sum and myself all played. Had a grand old time smashin things and getting beat down. Managed to go winless in five games. But had a fine time doing it. And Warhammer Fantasy is still a thousand times better.

Not much else new going on. We finally saw some snow. Yeah, take it Al Gore! You and your army of left wing conspirators can t keep the snow from us forever. Once we get some real accumulation the plan is to head off to Foxhole for some arctic warfare. We ll test to see just how bad it was for Napolean and Hitler s doomed armies.

An interesting football note. I may be sold on Mike Tomlin, the new Steelers coach. And here s why: he has a daughter named Harlyn Quinn. Harly Quinn? So he s either a huge Kevin Smith fan or a closet comic nerd! How great is that?

In a completely unrelated topic, I ve been posing a question to a lot of people. Figured I d post it here as well. It s a conundrum. Say you re the leader of a gang of toughs. You agree to a knife fight with a rival gang leader to settle an old score. In accordance with longstanding traditions they lash your wrists together and you make with the stabbing and slashing. Here s the rub... is it cool to just slash the wrist of your opponent? It s right there. No one ever does that. Would that completely destroy your criminal credibility or would you be lauded for employing such a devious scheme of low cunning? I gotsta know. So, everyone, please post your take. This is important, dammit.

Even further unrelated, Sunday night Adult Swim re-ran the Hunter S episode of Venture Brothers. So damn good. It inspired me to read some Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas that night. So damn good. I only wish I had read the book before seeing the film. Now, I am unable to seperate the two. Ah well.

Enough incoherent ramblings for now. Talk to you nerds later.

Finally got around to my annual review of my movie-going for 2006. Click on the Movie Lists->By Year link at left and scroll to the bottom to read it.

Not a big movie year by any stretch.

My playoff streak continues. 0 for 6 now after going 15-0. This is why I don t bet on football. Any given Sunday. At least the games were exciting. And the Football Gods clearly reared their heads. The Pats were doomed to defeat after their ignoble post game celebrations after a game that they were clearly outplayed and then handed the win due to SD bone-headed mistakes.

Then the Saints looked like they were clearly the better team (minus the turn-overs) until Reggie Bush inexplicably taunts Urlacher. Way to wake the slumbering bear... err Bears. Then it was clobbering time.

So, I will maintain my ship jumping posture and root for the Bears on SuperBowl Sunday. I ll also predict a Bears win. Peyton Manning must maintain his Chokasaurus Rex title. The monkey looks good on him.

In other football news, I m befuddled by the Steelers. Mike Tomlin over Grim as Cowher s successor made no sense to me. I can understand the desire to bring in some new blood, to light a fire after a disappointing season of underperforming, but come on. The Vikings? They were last in the league versus the pass. They fawn over Tomlin for being a Dungy defensive protege (the guy who reigns over the worst defense of the modern era). He s made a name for himself with 4-3 cover 2 defenses... the antithesis of the Steelers D. Hopefully with LeBeau staying his vile machinations will be stymied for tried and true Steelers tenets. If he brings motivation and fire and leaves the rest alone then that s fine. I guess we ll see.

I still think Russ Grim was the obvious choice.

On the BloodBowl front, work is already being done in preparation for the Mafia Massacre tourney in July. We re making boards, designing logos, planning things... it s madness. I blame Jamie. Last year we flew by the seat of our pants and things pretty much worked out.

Tonight is movie night at TGM s. Mmm... chili. We ll see just how badly we can dismay Michael-Bay-fanboy-Ben with movie selections!

1/17/2007 12:52:29 PM         Jumping ShipComments (17)
Well the results of last week s Playoff games has me so unsettled, I m jumping ship. The two teams from the AFC I least wanted to make the Superbowl are on the verge of doing just that. It s upsetting. Especially cause I stand by my picks, as most of the losers handed their games over to their foes. None moreso than the Chargers. Idiots. Two horrocious personal fouls, WRs who absolutely refused to catch balls... Arg. They were clearly the best team in football and then rolled over for the Pats. How is it the only QB who hasn t sucked this playoffs (Phillip Rivers) gets sent home? NE got damn lucky. Which worries me. Those bastards had some insane luck during their last run, I fear it will return.

So, anyway, I m jumping ship. Despite bad-mouthing the NFC relentlessly all season I m rooting for the Saints from here on out. The feel good story of the millenia. And I m hoping they beat the Pats... if nothing else, so that Peyton may retain his much deserved Chokasaurus Rex mantle.

So my picks for Championship Sunday align with who I m rooting for: Pats over Colts (cause the Pats always own the Colts in the playoffs) and Saints over Bears.

In other news, Meghan and I took advantage of our Monday off to take in Childern of Men. All the buzz about this film is quite warranted. It s a good film superbly executed. The camera-work, the attention to detail, the sets... amazing. Plus a couple added bonuses for me personally: All the military types are weilding XM-8s, the prototype gun my paintball gun is modeled after... sweet! Plus my long held beleif that listening to too much Beatles music will result in sending the listener into a persistent vegetative state was confirmed. The human brain can only take so much of that lousy shit.

So, go see the movie if you haven t already. And doubly so for you left-wing nutjobs, like the Lord Humungous.

While, I m here, I also need to mention our adventures in Wilkes-Barre. We had five for the Bar Brawl and had a grand time. Jamie, Probie, jkarr, Bastius and myself witnessed firsthand the strange wonderland that is still-depressed-from-the-coal-industry-bust-of-the-40s-Wilkes-Barre. The locals told us if you go to the right area you could get a hooker to move in with you permanently for a 20 spot. We just wanted one we could kill and keep in the hotel room (they re not good for more than 2 days) but Bastius failed to perform the proper red light district reconaissance for us.

Despite that we had a fine time. Unfortunate hotel room facings meant I was unable to draw an audience for the much anticipated sexy dance, but it seemed to delight jkarr as much as last time (big fag that he is).

In the tournament itself, I was robbed of my rightful title once again. This time by jkarr who beat my team down horribly as I failed dice rolls at every turn. So I took Runner-Up, Best Painted and Most TDs. Still not a bad haul.

The W-B guys seem excited by the prospect of more BloodBowl despite the thrashing they took at the hands of out of towners so it ll be nice to have another crew from which to draw players for PA events.

Enough rambling for now.

I ll be heading off for Wilkes-Barre for the Bar Brawl BloodBowl Tourney in a few hours. Should be an excellent time. Jamie, jkarr, Probie and Bastius may even be lucky enough to see me break out the Sexy Dance. Oh yeah, it is on.

Kent is still trying to weasel out of work to make the trip. Damn slave driving Circuit City bastards.

In other news it s time for my next round of playoff predictios as I attempt to keep my 15-0 streak alive. I should point out that my predictions are often not aligned with the team I m rooting for. I m not just picking with my heart.

Ravens over Colts. The great thing about the powerhouse Colts is that in the AFC they perenially need to get through Pitt, NE or other hard-nosed teams... often outdoors in January, to advance deep in the playoffs. Places where their finesse-I d-rather-trick-you-than-beat-you offense just doesn t fly. I was a Ravens doubter early in the season when they were eeking out close games against bad teams. But they kept getting better. Their bevy of injury prone players stayed healthy and they are a juggernaut now. An amazing defense and an offense that won t lose them games (take note, Chicago). Given that D and Manning s shaky playoff performaces past and present... I foresee a long day for poor Peyton.

Philly over Saints. This is the toughest pick of the weekend. On paper this one goes to the Saints. No question. But the playoffs is often about the right team getting hot at the right time. The Iggles are hot. And how many Saints have any playoff experience? Too many X-factors and intangibles go to Philly.

Seattle over Chicago. I just have zero confidence in Chicago. Grossman has not looked good against a good team ever, and often looks awful against awful teams. This is the playoffs. His kind of performance will not cut it. The vaunted Bears defense has been exposed a couple of times and the Seahawks will be getting a few walking wounded back on the field (as opposed to last week when they were seemingly holding tryouts in the parking lot with pre-game tailgaters). Unless they get a couple of return TDs I just don t see Chicago winning.

Chargers over Patriots. Hard to pick against the Pats in the playoffs but the Chargers are just too good. They re the cream of the crop of the NFL this year, no doubt. Pats have been shaky at times this season. Their run is over.

So there are my picks.

Enjoy the games.

Good bye, Bill Cowher. Good bye, Chin. Been a grand ride. Thanks for the trip. Gonna miss that guy.

Hard part will be seeing him on another team s sideline, as it sounds like he will return to the NFL sooner or later.

And now... playoffs.

My predictions for the weekend:

Indy over KC in the battle to see whose defense can suck more. In short, I think KCs. Sure LJ will run wild, but not enough to overcome their pourous defense. Plus Herm Edwards is a disgrace to the NFL and needs to be home pouting.

Seattle over Dallas, just because TO sucks and Romo is not the wunderkind the talking heads tried to convince us he was a month ago. Not yet at least.

New England over the Jets cause you just don t roll over Bill Belichick twice. And it s Brady in the playoff where he typically magically transforms into a god.

Philly over NYG because Eli sucks. Sucks real bad. We re talking the suckiest suck that ever sucked.

For the record, my Superbowl prediction: Chargers over Iggles. Though it wouldn t surprise me if it was the Saints assuming the annual role of NFC whipping boy.

Time to watch the games...

Ah, New Years. Some things never change. Talk about a long standing tradition. I think I ve missed shooting guns on New Years Eve three times since the age of 8 or 9. This years installment:

Good stuff. A couple hundred rounds of 7.62 and 5.56 were expelled in a few minutes. One of these days I m sure the police will show up... especially as more and more developments creep into the area and old rural traditions slowly fall by the wayside (of course we ve taken that a old tradition to a new extreme, but you get the idea). But, until then we ll keep blasting away.

So, reflections on 06...

Elation of the highest degree with the Steelers historic Championship run.

As a side note I successfully predicted the outcome of every playoff game... a perfect 11 for 11.

BloodBowl was big in the spring. I won my second AGBBL title and started playing fumbbl in earnest.

Gun shows and shooting galore in March.

Meghan moved in around April, slightly lowering the house testosterone levels and adding to the overall mess and unkempt theme.

June was my 10 year college reunion, attended with Mark T and Chad, where we reflected on our impending old age and regret about not attending Pharmacuetical school.

Joined the gym and played some raquetball in June. Also, we learned that soccer might be made slightly less boring if head-butting was made legal.

July was my 31st birthday and the start of our Paintball obsession. Like we needed another one!

More paintball in August and an ill-fated trip to Pittsburgh to kick off an ill-fated season.

October featured me eschewing the bearded look for the traditional goateed bampf.

I also perfected my sexy dance during an excellent trip to IL to hang out with Tipping and play some BloodBowl. Alas the multi-flush BM eluded me.

Shortly after IL, Meghan and I hit up Vegas... highlighted by the Amazing Jonathon and us robbing the Fitzgeralds crap tables blind.

My Trandorian D&D campaign sort of ended with the party s assembling of the complete "Weather Dominator" and awakening Serpentor and D&D went on hiatus in favor of vaunted Nerd Nights.

And that about brings us to now...

All in all a damn fine year. Have to do my annual movie wrap up as well.
