Quote of the Day:
Let me live deep while I live; let me know the rich juices of red meat and stinging wine on my palate, the hot embrace of white arms, the mad exultation of battle when blue blade flame and crimson, and I am content. Let teachers and priests and philosophers brood over questions of reality and illusion. I know this: if life is illusion, then I am no less an illusion, and being thus, the illusion is real to me. I live, I burn with life, I love, I slay, and I am content. -Conan of Cimmeria

Firefly tonight! Sweet. We finished the last of the series last night (in just under the wire, Todd) and we re looking at a 10:00 showing with a substantial group. Should be awesome.

Looks like there may be a gun show trip tomorrow. Sweet. And BloodBowl starts Sunday. Alas, looks like I ll miss it as my cousin is getting married so I ll be forced to trade BB for a redneck wedding. D oh.

Also. I promised some pics from last week. Here s Meghan and I at the Ren Faire. Mostly Meghan. In her heavily layered costume she wore there and then in her (uncharacteristic) fancy girly expensive dress that she left with:

Ren Faire Pics

Go see Serenity. Do it.

9/27/2005 9:51:07 AM         Pats are cheatersComments (3)
So the Patriots are big cheaters. They obviously poisoned the normal time keeper and had him replaced by a crony so as to screw the Stillers. Well... that may be a stretch, but the mystery time fiasco added to a very bizarre game. Lots of mistakes on both sides. We certainly played well enough to win and two really bone headed plays may have cost us the game. We did manage to maim two of the Pats best players. That ll hurt them quite a bit and I feel pretty good about our chances in a playoff meeting. I don t think we ll give Brady some many zones to devour next time. He destroyed us.

Anyway. Friday I was up late playing Fantasy Battles. Eviscerated two dwarf armies (Dwarfs are big cheaters, I hate them) to the point where I spent the last couple turns of both games apologizing for what I had done.

Saturday I mostly slept and Sunday Meghan and I hit the Ren Faire. It was a good time. I could insert the old adage about how every year it gets more commercial and less cool/fun/interesting. It s pretty much true, but at this point not worth dwelling on. We had fun. Saw some cool acts. Hung out with Glass Blower Jay in his natural setting and even ran into the ever elusive Robert Santos II. Good stuff. I have some pics maybe I ll post later. Obviously, we were both in costume. Strangely enough Meghan was in period garb despite wearing mostly items she wears normally.

In other news, BloodBowl starts this weekend! Sweet sweet BloodBowl. Gotta try to recover from the monumental disaster that was the last league. Interest has waned, but that actually may be a good thing. Lets us keep the die hards and trims the quitters who tanked the last league. We ll see how it goes.

Also, I found a BF2 server that doesn t use tanks. It s amazing just how good that game is when you remove the horribly overpowered vehicles. I don t know what s wrong with EA to make such a beautiful game engine and then poop all over it by making the game itself nigh unplayable with so many unbalanced elements.

So we now have HBO. They had the free promotional weekend a while back and hooked us. We get about two dozen HBO channels on the digital cable box (and one of them is high def). Coupled with the new Rome series, for $10 a month, we were sold.

Rome seems pretty good. Seen the first couple of episodes and it s very well done. Maybe not the next Band of Brothers but definitely seems worth watching.

We d heard a lot about Deadwood, so The Kent and I watched an episode. We had the exact same first impression-- 'when did HBO start hiring my cousin Garry as a script writer?' Seems the idea is: if they insert the word 'fuck' as an adjective before every noun spoken and the word 'fucking' as an adverb before every other verb spoken, that will make the show racy and cutting edge.

Pretty bizarre concept really, but not without precedent. Of course they also throw in a couple of naked breasts for good measure and there you go... instant hit.

I think we ll stick with Rome. Besides, John Milius was one of the creators of Rome... you know, the man who brought us the greatest movie ever: Conan the Barbarian.

So there.

PS Sorry, Todd, but yes, this has cut into our Firefly viewing. Still on track for Serenity though.

First off, I would like to point out that a lot of 'experts' unfathomably predicted the Ravens to finish ahead of the Steelers in the North. Now, these imbeciles are starting to look the brain dead morons that they are. Idiots.

So there. In other news I ve managed to get Kent at least a little bit excited about football... or about Troy Polamaulu at the very least. Nice.

Not much going on otherwise. Watching Firefly (gotta keep Todd in check). Watching football. Playing Warhammer. Good stuff.

Looks like this Sunday I may be going to the Renn Faire. Evan was planning a trip next month when his supposed girlfriend (she lives in Canada, you probably never met her) is to be in town, but Meghan has some friends going Sunday and looks like we ll go as well. So, anybody out there interested in a Ren Faire trip? Let me know. Would be cool to get a nice crowd together.

In other news, I m giving serious consideration to returning to playing rugby. InHD keeps showing 7s games and it s ignited my desire to smash fellow ruggers under foot. Don t know if my aging body or my shoulder (the injury that helped drive me from the game) would hold up, but I figure it s worth finding out. Would be nice to get back into some kind of shape. Would be nice to tackle people once again. We ll see what happens.

Life is good right now. I ve got a giant pot of pork and saur kraut cooking and the house is filled with that sweet aroma. Thanks be to my germanic forebears for not having enough sense to disregard rotten vegetables as a viable food source.

Been keeping busy. Doing stuff with Meghan. Killing Americans with Stoner on BF2. My campaign seems to be going well and is really heating up. Been having fun with my character in Josh s campaign (a character who is completely inept in just about any encounter save one on a ballroom dance floor... beautiful).

Steelers are looking awesome. They re gonna be the best team in football. Hands down. They had the best record in football last year (despite a nasty schedule) and I think they are vastly improved from last year.

Work is good. Just finished a couple of major projects and have a few more coming. Less and less long commutes. Just started a stock purchasing program. Sweet.

I know there was other stuff I wanted to post, but I can t think of it right now. The smell of the kraut is limiting my thought process. I better go before I start to drool.

9/6/2005 8:06:53 PM         So soon...Comments (5)
Just a few days... soon. So soon. And football will be upon us again. There is no greater day than opening day of the National Football League. None. So... soon.

Stillers are looking good. Matter of fact, they re looking great on paper. Of course, their offense has looked dreadful all preseason, so we ll see what happens. I m optimistic. In the long run, it s not important... what is important is that football is almost here.

Had a good long weekend. Started with Meghan and I making an abortive attempt to eat an entire bucket of ice cream in one sitting. We fell well short, but made a noble effort.

Sunday I made it out to fighter practice and got to beat on some friends. Gotta love that. I knocked the rust off pretty quickly. Good times. Mashed Chiv s hand, but good. Alas, Fester was not about for a momumental mace battle. Maybe next time.

Afterwards I took Meghan to the range, where she proved a whiz with a .22. Alas, her uber-slight frame was no match for the AK.

Monday we hit the Harrisburg Kapona thing for some quality fair food. Pretty good stuff, but a sore substitute for the fireman s festivals we missed this summer.

Lastly... my lawn mower won t start. Anybody know how to make em go? I am completely inept in all things mechanical.

Well, I need to go and do some work. I have a project that has caused me much chagrain over the last week and I m trying to put a nail in the damn thing.

So I m scanning news channels and just saw live video phone images of a police standoff with random armed hodlums in the streets of downtown New Orleans at midday. That s friggin madness.

I m starting to think maybe a tactical nuke could remedy a lot of the problems...

So it took me a long time to pay any attention to the New Orleans thing. I typically don t care about weather related news. I don t consider it news... it s the weather... it happens. To me it s like reporting on oxygen and nitrogen levels in the air.

But the New Orleans thing is getting kind of crazy. Apparently it s turned into some kind of magical underwater city. Kind of like the Sea World of cities. That s pretty cool I guess.

What they need to do now is to send in some Blackhawks with snipers and to start shooting looters. That would be even cooler.

Of course the great thing about the whole event is that we don t have to listen to anything about the retarded woman sitting outside Bush s ranch or the stupid chick lost in Aruba. Talk about being desperate for a story.

Anyway. I have been checking out the news sites and watching CNN some lately just to see the amazing aerial shots of an entire city with just its rooftops above water. Friggin crazy. Maybe its another sign of the end of days. Here s hoping. I m really surprised some right wing nutjob hasn t come out yet claiming that God laid waste to the city for its accumulated back log of hedonism.

Those whacky girls gone wild... they ll doom yer city for a few cheap trinkets to string around their necks.

Well, it s time for lunch. Talk to ya later.
