Quote of the Day:
Let me live deep while I live; let me know the rich juices of red meat and stinging wine on my palate, the hot embrace of white arms, the mad exultation of battle when blue blade flame and crimson, and I am content. Let teachers and priests and philosophers brood over questions of reality and illusion. I know this: if life is illusion, then I am no less an illusion, and being thus, the illusion is real to me. I live, I burn with life, I love, I slay, and I am content. -Conan of Cimmeria

During glorious paintball festivities Sunday I got hit in the testicle. Not the groin region in general. In the testicle. The left, to be exact. That... really... hurt.

Other than that the day was a ton of fun. We took a huge crew again, this time with tons of black guys thanks to Terrance, Lonnie and Darrel. Good times despite the race war feel of many of the games. Most everyone seemed to have a good time. Cool-ness. One of these days when everyone shows up we ll roll in with like 50 people and just take that place over. And sadly, once again, no Sum. We ll drag his ass out soon enough though... Ya hear me, old man?? Yer playin.

In football news, the Stillers are awesome. Miami has felt our wrath. I really think the team will be better this year than last. Maybe significantly better. Our passing attack is vastly improved. Our defense is getting better-- Hope was not a significant loss, and Keisel is an upgrade at DE, and we have several rising stars in the secondary. I d say by next season we could easily have the best secondary in the league.

Now, while I fawn and gibber about the Steelers greatness, I will qualify my words by saying I m not expecting a repeat. I think we have a decent chance, but in this day of parity the stars really need to align to double up. Sure the Pats did it recently, but they also coulda/shoulda been eliminated any number of times (Viniateri kicks, tuck rule, lucky bounces). Luck plays a much bigger role than analysts like to admit. Just the nature of the game.

On the home front, Meghan has become inspired to do some home repair/upgrades. The bathroom has new tiling. Paint is bought for the chipped and cracking outside porch/stairs and more improvements are planned. Things should be shaping up nicely.

Guess I should say something about 9/11 since it s everywhere today. Hm... Guess I don t have too much to say. It sucked. I remember that. I recall being profoundly affected by images of people plummeting from atop the towers. But, I also remember thinking we were on the verge of an Invasion USA scenario (and maybe we should call in Chuck Norris). That never happened. In fact, I think the most incredible thing about the anniversary is that five years after terrorists showed they were willing to attack the US on America soil, nothing has happened since! I m not sure how to interpret that. Despite the constant criticism of Homeland Defense (and the Terror Threat level) and the War on Terror we have not been touched since. To me that means we re winning. Yeah. Suck it, terrorists.

Now granted things seem to suck elsewhere in the world, but those people also think soccer is a real sport. So, who cares about them?

Well, enough about that. I m devoted to keeping this area actively apolitical. As I make a constant effort to be apolitical. There are too many other more interesting things to talk/think about... like geekery, football, shooting things, etc etc. Apathy rocks. Yeah. Suck it, politicos.

Life is not worth living in the offseason.

NFL Network just played an NFL Films 10 minute montage of the entire 2005 season. Gave me chills (Vince Lombardi voice overs, Dick Vermeil and Trent Green...) and then brought me to tears. Why is football is fucking great?

Thursday is the Day of days.

Also, speaking of NFL Network looks like they brought in Brian Baldinger to be this season s Jim Mora. Apparently they need a guy to say really moronic things to make Rod Wodson and Rich Eisen look good. Not only did he make like three factually incorrect statements (not opinions, statements) but he kept using the wrong words in his sentences... idiot... gives O-linemen a bad name.

I am sad today. First, just days before the greatest day of the year (Opening Day) a terrible pall is cast... Big Ben has an emergency apendectomy. What the hell? What next? It just ain t right. Oh well... they re saying he ll be back by Week 3. Charlie Batch won us two games last year, I m confident he ll do it again this year. Plus we somehow signed Ike Taylor to a long deal. I was sure we were gonna lose him to free agency next year. This is very good news.

Also on the sadness front, Steve Irwin is dead. Killed by a critter. This makes me very sad. Granted he was really overplayed but he was supercool way back when. Plus he had that boy-like wonderment in everything he did. A sad day.

In other news I mowed the lawn today. First physical activity of any kind since my back pain. No ill effects so looks like I ll be able to get back to raquetball and paintball and everything else. So hurrah.

Also, go check out OK Go s video for Here it Goes Again. There s a link on vilebunny. Greatest video since Weapon of Choice!!
