Quote of the Day:
Let me live deep while I live; let me know the rich juices of red meat and stinging wine on my palate, the hot embrace of white arms, the mad exultation of battle when blue blade flame and crimson, and I am content. Let teachers and priests and philosophers brood over questions of reality and illusion. I know this: if life is illusion, then I am no less an illusion, and being thus, the illusion is real to me. I live, I burn with life, I love, I slay, and I am content. -Conan of Cimmeria

6/4/2003 12:29:59 PM         Heros and VilliansAdd Comment
So AFI has given us another list of 100 Greatest... this time greatest heroes and villians. The list itself is nauseatingly PC. A couple of blatant affronts: Man listed as one of the greatest villians, Erin Brockovic not only making the hero list but being ranked a couple dozen slots ahead of Moses, Ripley and Thelma & Louis included to buffer their female quota...

I could go on, the list is truly despicable.

There are some decent choices- Indiana Jones, Rocky, Spartacus, Han Solo for heroes and villians- Vader, Hanibal Lector, Hans Gruber, the Queen from Sleeping Beauty (damn, did she ever scare the shit out of me when I was a kid), and it s cool that the Terminator made both lists.

Other choices seem completely random- Cool Hand Luke? Wasn t he an anti-hero protagonist? Alex DeLarge from A Clockwork Orange ranked #12 villian... it s clear they missed the whole point of that film (same could be said about Travis Bickle s inclusion from Taxi Driver).

Obviously their definition of hero (and villian) is pretty ambiguous. So I challenge everyone to compile their own list of top 10 heroes and villians of film (or 20 if you prefer) to see if we can get a definitive list devoid of sycophantic kowtowing to political climates.

I ll be checking the comments section as I work on my own lists.

6/4/2003 11:22:09 PM         Stating the obvious.
I know it is to be expected of me, but I gotta include the Mad Max villians. Toecutter was a bad ass. And of course The Ayatollah of Rock and Rollah, The Lord of the Wasteland, The Humungus was my personal favorite. Remember, he was sporting the scary goalie mask before Jason (approximately a year before).
And just for me personally, I thought that Victor Huggo Martin and Gael García Bernal did a great job portraying Fidel Castro and Ernesto "Che" Guevara as righteous revolutionary protagonists in the movie !FIDEL!. But then I'm a I'm dark red, so my views may be quite a bit slanted.
Now I didn't see the show, but I figured they probably skipped my boys.
6/4/2003 11:23:54 PM         Sorry, forgot to sign my above statement.
Being a jackass I forgot to sign in as Brandon or The Lord Humungus.
6/5/2003 8:43:01 AM         Done!
Man, coming up with only a top ten while being away from my blessed collection o' happiness is tough but here it is, for what it's worth. Comments and complaints are cheerfully accepted.

It'll be on the front page for at least a week.

6/5/2003 10:46:55 AM         Cool.
Yep, there's a couple in there I forgot about and several more from flicks I've never seen (Conan, Beastmaster, Boondock Saints). When compiling my villains list I sort of cast around for really good villainous actors and then picked their best role (Alan Rickman, Gary Oldman). I can't friggin believe I missed Malkovich!

Hellfire and damnation.

AFI will never convince me that Rickman's bad guy in Die Hard - excellent though it was - is superior to his Sheriff in Robin Hood. Stupid Hollywood commie bastards.

6/6/2003 9:56:13 AM         Another List
Wanderer's first list gives me another idea, something like a top-ten list of best and worst changes in society. Hrm, have to refine that idea and post if I've got time.

2 hangovers in 2 days and it's D-Day. I feel like the Germans must have felt as those 16 inch shells slammed into their emplacements.

-bp
6/6/2003 10:27:39 AM         Kinda vague
Since when though. Tough call. Since the industrial revelution? Since the 60s? The list would change dramatically based on that...

It s a good idea though (mayhap The Wanderer s first and only). Hmmm... food for thought.

-b
6/6/2003 12:53:49 PM         Good Ideas!
Hey... my "Cheez Wiz & Hershey Bar" is LEGENDARY!

Not to mention... I invented the Internet!

6/6/2003 2:36:04 PM         HOW COULD WE NOT FORGET...
HERO:

#1 (Without a Doubt) Father McGruder (Stuart Devenie, Dead Alive (aka Braindead))

6/7/2003 6:34:37 AM         dissn' Me??
Why are you putting me and cheese wiz in the same sentence wanderer?

-Dover
6/9/2003 8:26:43 AM         McGruder
I gave Father McGruder a very serious consideration for my hero list, but alas, decided his grand total of two minutes of screen time was just not enough to warrant inclusion despite his valiant heroism in the face overwelming zombie infestations.

I also agree..
