Quote of the Day:
Let me live deep while I live; let me know the rich juices of red meat and stinging wine on my palate, the hot embrace of white arms, the mad exultation of battle when blue blade flame and crimson, and I am content. Let teachers and priests and philosophers brood over questions of reality and illusion. I know this: if life is illusion, then I am no less an illusion, and being thus, the illusion is real to me. I live, I burn with life, I love, I slay, and I am content. -Conan of Cimmeria

OK, I promised this list a couple days ago, then lost it half way through completion and had to recreate it. Anyway, it s my favorite singles. Songs that I can listen to over and over without tiring of them. In many cases they re one hot wonders and I couldn t name a second song by the artist. For others it s only one of a countless songs that I love (I limited it to one song per artist to avoid glutting the list with TMBG and such). I know I m forgetting some really great songs, but that happens. Without further ado, and in no particular order at all:

"She's an Angel" They Might Be Giants
"Black" Pearl Jam
"Losing My Religion" R.E.M.
"Rooster" Alice in Chains
"One Week" Bare Naked Ladies
"Blister in the Sun" Violent Femmes
"Closer" Nine Inch Nails
"O Fortuna" Carmina Burana, Karl Orf
"Trip Like I Do" The Crystal Method

"Plush" Stone Temple Pilots
"El Paso" Marty Robbins
"Poisoning Pigeons in the Park" Tom Lehrer
"Shame" Stabbing Westward

I thought about adding a Brodsky song... but I think I discovered him too recently. He hasn t endured the test of time yet. Although if I was to pick a best from him though I d go with "Gaucho Named Klaus" or "Amy and Ani".

Another side note, remembered a song that I had on my original list that got deleted and then forgot to re-add: "Pepper" by Butthole Surfers.

I guess there's only one or two on there I don't recognize which is pretty good.

I think the inclusion of the Isaak single might be due cause for taking away your man card. There's just entirely too much sappiness in there. Men don't listen to lyrics dude, it's just a rule.

BTW: saw Kirwin and the boys Thursday night backstage in Baltimore. Tried to shake his hand a couple of times to say thanks for the memories but kept getting run over by roadies swapping sets in incredibly short timespans. Maybe next time.
6/23/2003 12:36:32 PM         Wicked
Hold on hold on... the Wicked Game video is like the all time hottest video ever! That alone validates its inclusion.

I saw on the Black47 website that they re playing Philly in late July. Hmm...

I figured you included it for the video but you should have made that explicit.

Besides, what's the big damn deal? It's a wet chick squirming around while some poofter wails in the background.

Not to my taste. But then again, I've never been a fan of ballads or romantic type songs. The most romantic sort of tune I ever liked had the lines:

"So I found me a whore
with a face just like yours
after several gallons of porter."

My kind of love song.
