And to add further weight to this List of Lists... it just happens to be Blog Entry Number 600! Total coincidence. Honest.

Pan's Labyrinth is an incredible movie and could definately sneak in there.
-Stoner |
| 5/9/2007 6:56:25 AM I think Pan's Labyrinth is disqualified |
By nature of it not being in English.
--erion (who thinks that 'O Brother Where Art Thou' needs to be much higher on the list by nature of making 'The Odyssey' into a comedy.) |
| 5/9/2007 9:22:01 AM Just curious |
| Why give a slot to each installment of LOTR? I want to know your reasoning for excluding other nigh worthy films just to be specific about different segments of an epic film. |
| 5/9/2007 9:38:38 AM Lumping |
Lumping all three together doesn t really make sense to me. Taken as a whole the trilogy would also have to garner a much higher position, further slanting the list. Lastly it also allows me to rate the three movies against each other.

| 5/9/2007 2:44:48 PM Terry Gilliam |
Nice to see Terry Gilliam getting a lot of nods. I'll give him a pass for the anemic Brothers Grimm.
Also, where's CB4??
-grm |
| 5/9/2007 3:28:36 PM Oh yeah |
I tried to make sure I had all my favorite directors well covered... Gilliam, Coen Bros, Luhrmann, Mann. Gotta give proper credit.
And re: the Pan s Labyrinth thing... probably won t make the list simply due to lacking in replay value. Something that is probably the biggest factor in determining this list.
CB4. Yer silly. Haven t seen that in years.

| 5/11/2007 5:48:33 AM What!?! |
No Pearl Harbor?
Oh... this isn't Ruppie.
Nice List. I need to compose mine.

| 5/12/2007 9:29:47 AM addendum |
As long as your on the Terry Gilliam kick, you may want to add Brazil. And as for psychadelic murderers, you could get away with adding Natural Born Killers. And lets not forget the large bugs in Starship Troopers.

| 5/12/2007 9:31:11 AM oops |
Sorry must have skipped over Brazil on my first look see.
Ry |
| 5/13/2007 1:36:52 PM Only good bug... |
I am rather fond of Starship Troopers and I m a big fan of Verhoeven (anyone up for a Black Book viewing?) but making the Top 40 would be a serious stretch.
I do wish I coulda squeezed Office Space in there somewhere, though.
Oh well.

| 5/14/2007 6:27:57 AM Where's the Holy Trilogy? |
Are they so sacrosanct as to be included at +1, +2, and +3 on a list like this?
-bp |
| 5/14/2007 7:33:27 AM I sincerely hope |
You aren't referring to anything Star Wars related. You sorely do not want to raise bampf's ire.

|
| 5/14/2007 10:41:14 AM Black Book |
Fuck yeah!
-- Wanderer |
| 5/14/2007 1:58:41 PM Need I say it again? |
Fuck Lucas. Fuck him right in his stupid fucking asshole.
Too late. Ire raised. Only a honky would invoke the Holy Trilogy...

| 5/15/2007 6:47:40 AM The Only Good Film |
To come out of Star Wars since 1983 has been the animated stuff.
Clone Wars I and II did a much better job of Star Wars (which is to say as we remember it from our collective youth) storytelling than anything from the "Special Edition" re-workings or the prequel trilogy.
Let Genndy Tartakovsky do a post-Jedi series with Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher and maybe even Harrison Ford doing voice-overs. It will redeem the franchise (but not Lucas) in the hive-mind.

| 5/15/2007 8:33:11 AM Ah, get a life |
Ignore post 1983 and get in touch with your inner Reagan youth. Weenie.
You have way too many modern flicks on there. According to that list there was virtually nothing worthwhile made prior to 1994. This ain't exactly the golden age of movie making.
-bp |
| 5/15/2007 12:44:45 PM Bah |
Old movies suck. The bar was way too low back then. I only own a handful of films made before my birth (and those fall into only three distinct categories... war movies, John Wayne movies and John Wayne war movies).
I think if you go back and look at the 'classics' they were only considered that because of the poor quality of film making that preceeded it. Read modern review of a classic and you ll always come across the phrase 'for the time.' Well it ain t the time. Let s move on.
I prefer new and innovative.
There are some 80s films near and dear to my heart, before that... fuck all.
So there. Post a list on bangpitcher.com and we can compare notes. And I ll critique from here (since your comments haven t worked in years).
-b |
| 5/15/2007 1:22:52 PM My comments don't work? |
Huh. I had no idea.
Well, fair enough. Why comment? I haven't posted in years.
Alright then, I accept your challenge. Me and a case of PBR will be sitting down and compiling a list. And it will be positively replete with Holy Trilogy references!
And at least one old flick.
-bp
And that's an absolutely beautiful description of your collection of classics. Something to be used more often in normal conversation. |
| 5/15/2007 2:44:35 PM Yeah, no comments |
No comments. I left a comment about it... but alas.
Thought you d appreciate my categorization of old movies...
I anxiously await the definitive bp list.
-b |
| 5/16/2007 6:05:06 AM Is.... |
The Conqueror part of your collection?
It was John Wayne's best performance evah!
If not... I guess I'll bring it over one night for a screening.
-- Wanderer |
| 5/16/2007 1:21:29 PM Oh yeah |
Who better to cast as Temujin than The Duke? That texas drawl sounds just like a Mongolian accent.
No I don t own The Conqueror. Don t be silly.
-b |
| 5/17/2007 5:14:46 AM |
No I don t own The Conqueror. Don t be silly.
You make me sad, brotha.
There ain't no reason to be said by owning of them Duke's films. There ain't. Just do it.
I recieved it free to review... so at least I didn't pay for it.
-- Wanderer |
| 5/17/2007 7:21:09 AM Wait. What? |
John Wayne played Genghis Khan?
The world has gone mad...
-e
|
| 5/17/2007 12:26:22 PM Yup |
Yeah and it might have killed him. They filmed next to a Utah nuclear test site. Nearly half the cast and crew involved eventually died of cancer (though The Duke s 5-packs-a-day cigarette habit may have contributed).
And the film is hysterically bad. Wayne as Ghenhis, a red headed irish chick as the Tartar love interest while mexicans, injuns and WASPs fill in as Mongol horde. It is gloriously awful. A must watch of the Plan-9 order.
-b |
| 5/17/2007 9:55:07 PM Well okay... |
...You addressed one of my complaints with the list. Now that John Wayne has been given love (especially in 'The Shootist' & 'The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance', Fuck Yeah), I can only bitch about the lack of other westerns. Most notable of these omissions is Unforgiven. I mean, Clint Eastwood. And 'High Noon' defined a whole genre of bad-assedness.
Never mind me though, you did include Tombstone. If I were to make a list it would be almost entirely westerns along with 'The Godfather' and 'Attack the Gas Station'.
-The Lord Humungus (oh yeah, and maybe "The Road Warrior') |
| 5/18/2007 10:18:25 AM Ah... Clint |
I strongly considered including The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly but Unforgiven never really did it for me.
I do own Road Warrior on DVD, but I never watch it. Viewing it now, it really doesn t stand the test of time. It s damn near awful... so I just don t watch in hopes of retaining the wonderment and awe felt when watching it as a kid. God, we loved that movie.
I know I have debased myself in the eyes of the Humungus one now, but I had to get that off my chest...
-b |
| 5/21/2007 12:28:49 AM Sadly... |
...I agree with you on The Road Warrior, but it's amazing what nostalgia lets me forgive. On Unforgiven, however, you are unquestionably WRONG. One of the greatest films ever even conceived. As Ed would say "Too Bad".
